Favorite thing about IHSA:

The opportunity to ride and compete on a larger and more abundant scale than I would be able to outside of IHSA. I have always been a working student in my riding career, so riding and showing has always been a tremendous privilege. I love that I am able to ride and show on my own accord and that I can really focus on myself and areas to improve on. I also love the amazing support system that comes with being part of a team like this. The girls and guys on my team were the first friends I really made when I came to college.

Favorite thing about IHSA:

I love being part of a team. As Captain, I really enjoy helping my teammates and cheering for them at shows! I am a rider that has never been able to afford to show, so I love being able to gain competitive experience without the expense. I also think it's great that the IHSA has something for everyone. You can be completely new to riding or showing and the IHSA will have a place for you. I would have never picked up Western without being a part of the IHSA! It's a truly humbling and valuable experience to become a beginner again, in a completely different discipline!

I began my freshman year with the western team as a beginner in Class 11, Walk/Trot rider. I had horse experience, but no show experience. It gives us the opportunity to progress and accomplish goals in a safe environment.

Zone/Region: Zone 6, Region 1

Major: French

Graduating: 2013

IHSA Level: Open Western

June 2013

Rider: Codi McConnell

Hometown:
 New Trenton, IN

School: Indiana University

Zone/Region: Zone 7, Region 1

Major: Nursing

Graduating: 2013

IHSA Level: Open Western

Favorite thing about IHSA: IHSA provides a great outlet for showing horses while away at school. Showing my horse while in college is a huge challenge and leaving my horse at home was one of the hardest adjustments when going away to school. IHSA fills that void and allows me to competitively show on a schedule that works with school. It is also a fun, different approach to showing horses. As a long time AQHA competitor, it is refreshing to show horses in a different way and to have the team aspect. It is so much more fun to show when you have 20 teammates rooting you on, and I love seeing my teammates with little experience grow and excel in the sport.

School: Indiana University

Zone/Region: Zone 7, Region 1

Graduating: 2014

IHSA Level: Open Western

Favorite thing about IHSA: IHSA shows are always a challenge since we aren't familiar with the horses before we ride. It's always fun to see how well I can do on a horse that isn't mine. When I began IHSA, I was a novice, and over the past two and a half years, I've finally made it to the Open division. It's great to work towards a goal like that.
