IHSA Welcomes National Snaffle Bit Association as Sponsor

Fairfield, CT (April 3, 2017) The Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA) and IHSA National Championships are delighted to welcome the National Snaffle Bit Association (NSBA) as a sponsor of America’s oldest and largest college equestrian sport association just as IHSA celebrates the 50th anniversary of its founding during its national championships, May 4-7, in the Alltech Arena of the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

Five NSBA trophies will be awarded in IHSA western national championship classes this year. IHSA and NSBA will work to develop a long range plan moving forward that will include expanding future awards to include both hunt seat and western divisions.

IHSA Vice President and US Military Academy at West Point equestrian team coach Peter Cashman said, “As IHSA celebrates its 50 anniversary, we are eager to continue striding forward with fellow organizations like NSBA.”

Since 1983, the mission of the National Snaffle Bit Association, Inc., has been to grow the show horse community through equine programs and events where every activity benefits horses, breeders, owners and exhibitors alike. The purpose of NSBA is to define, promote and improve the quality of the pleasure horse, to promote exhibits, events and contests in expositions and shows; the promote the training of pleasure horses, to promote interest in pleasure horses among younger horsemen and to use and encourage the use of the standard rules for holding and judging contests of the pleasure horse. IHSA promotes competition for full time student riders of all skill levels, who compete individually and as teams at regional to national levels based on the principle that any college student should be able to participate in horse shows regardless of financial status, gender or riding level. In 2017 IHSA celebrates the Golden 50th Anniversary of its 1967 founding by Fairleigh-Dickinson University sophomore Robert E. 'Bob' Cacchione and today serves more than 400 member institutions and 10,000 riders annually. Visit and follow IHSA on Facebook and Instagram for more about IHSA’s 50th Anniversary, teams, scholarships and alumni riding programs.

Spotlight Horse April 2017

Farm Name: Cornerstone Farm
Show Name: Cornerstone’s Star
Owner: Marisa Kalmar, Coach, Lehigh University
Breed: QH cross mare
Divisions Used in: Walk Trot through Open – Zone 3 Region 4

Star is loved far and wide. She was rescued when she was two from a terrible situation and she quickly learned how great life could be when it involved loving students.  She has taken riders from the Mini-Short Stirrup division through the Large Pony Hunter division in both local and rated horse shows, and has done the equivalent for many IHSA riders.  A Lafayette student created an Instagram tribute thanking her for many great performances including a win that helped her to qualify for Regionals.  Coaches feel confident when their riders draw Star, especially the ones new to IHSA competition.  She is now 20 years old and has participated in IHSA competition for almost 15 years!
